Natural Gas Prices Rise Ahead Of Inventory Data

Energy Insights: May 9, 2012

Natural Gas closed today at a two month high on expectations of slower production and the prospect of more demand for the fuel by natural gas fired generation. Tomorrow, 5/10/2012, all eyes will be on the EIA’s storage report release at 9:30am CST. Expectations on the injection number for the week ending on 5/4/2012 range from 25Bcf to 55Bcf. This range is well below the average. Last year for this week, gas storage rose by 71 billion cubic feet, while the five-year average rise in the week is 84 billion cubic feet.

Price Caps To Increase by 50% in Texas in 2012

PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION OF TEXAS (PUCT) TENTATIVELY APPROVES OFFER CAP INCREASE

On 4/12/12, the (PUCT) voted 2-1 to move forward with a proposal that would allow wholesale prices to climb to $4,500/MWh when supplies are tight, up from the current $3,000 price cap. This change will be effective from 8/1/2012 to 5/31/2013. None of the three commissioners disagreed on the need to raise wholesale prices during times of supply scarcity, only the timing and the method.

The supply overhang keeps pressuring NG futures lower, and there is greater market consensus that an additional 20%-30% drop is not out of the realm of possibilities.

Natural gas storage is currently at 60% of capacity, and stockpiles will continue to increase through spring. Currently, the natural gas price action has been dictated by technical indicators; however, as we get more information from the inventory expansion rate, fundamentals should push prices lower.
